Tamoko is traditional Maori Tattooing. The designs, swirls and lines within the Tattoo ALL mean something. They tell the story of the wearer and identify them to all he/she meets. Traditional Tamoko was a long process which involved consultation with many members of the Tribe and the commitment of the wearer to uphold the Mana (prestige/standing) of the Tribe as he would be wearing the Tribal History for all to see.
Women also wore facial tattoos however they were only allowed to tattoo their chins and lips. These were considered gifts from their people that they be allowed to wear the Tamoko. Once tattooed the wearer was required to conduct themselves in a manner which upheld the Tribe.
In modern times this Art has enjoyed a revival here in Aotearoa and indeed on a Global Scale with some celebrities such as Ben Harper and Robbie Williams proudly sporting them.
There are many differing views as to Non-Maori people getting a moko design. Some of our people find it distasteful and disrespectful, particularly if the wearer has failed to undertake research and consultation to ensure their design is fitting and respectful.
Others among us are honoured that people outside our culture feel a connection that is so strong that they wish to wear a Moko design on them.
I myself, consider it an honour to be asked to help you tell your story through Moko.
The process by which we design your Moko can be an emotional journey for you, it can be inspiring, moving and even surprising to you when you see the outcome and when you start to realise the importance of the people, events and places you are wanting to honour in your design.
